2013 Award Winners

Some of the 2013 Awards were presented at this year’s IHEEM Conference by Paralympic Gold Medallist Mark Colborne.

Mark Colborne

Mark Colborne participated in his first Paralympic games in London in the summer of 2012 after breaking his back in a near fatal paragliding accident in May 2009.  Mark Colborne won the very first medal for Paralympics GB with Silver in the 1km individual time trial, followed by his first Paralympic Gold medal in the 3km pursuit.  Mark Colborne is also the Official Patron of Pedal Power in Cardiff and helps Disability Sport Wales. 

Lucas Scholarship Award

Geoff Fitton

The Lucas Scholarship Award of 2013 was presented to Geoff Fitton who had worked tirelessly for IHEEM’s North West Branch holding various offices.  During this time he worked at North Manchester General Hospital as a Hospital Engineer.  He has recently moved to a different role but his service to both the Institute and the profession is now recognised with this prestigious award.

Northcroft Silver Medal

Paul Mayoh

The Northcroft Silver Medal was awarded to Paul Mayoh who is the UK Sales Technical Manager at Spirax Sarco.  Paul Mayoh received this award for his article which was published in the September 2012 issue of Health Estates Journal considering ways to reduce energy costs by ensuring condensate recovery systems are as efficient as possible.

Best Innovative Product or Service

Brandon Medical

The winner of the Best Innovative Product or Service was Brandon Medical for its Symposia range of digital AV products for Healthcare.  The Judges said they had been impressed with the way this company has taken modern technological advances and combined them with the traditional requirements for patient care and the teaching of students.

Healthcare Estates Sustainability Award


The Healthcare Estates sustainability Award was presented to Dalkia for a new CHP based energy centre at Stevenage’s 480 bed Lister Hospital, funded and built by the company under a 15 year contract energy management agreement which should reduce annual energy bills by an estimated £650,000 annually.

Healthcare Estates Marketing Award

Static Systems

This new award was presented to Static Systems.  The award was based on ‘Mystery Shopper’ visits to exhibitor’s stands during the shows first day.  Static Systems who specialise in nurse call, communications and bedhead services technology were praised by judges for ‘showing a good mix of marketing with education and building brand awareness at the forefront of its campaign.’

The William E Schall Award

Jason Wilsher

The William E Schall Award was presented at the 70th Anniversary Lunch which took place at the House of Lords.  The winner of this award was Jason Wilsher.  Jason Wilsher works for the York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in the Medical Engineering Department and is based in Scarborough.  He has recently completed his Foundation Degree Course in Medical Technologies achieving fantastic grades throughout and is now starting a top-up course that will lead to a BSc (Hons) in Medical Technologies Management.
