Lifetime Achievement Award

Presented by Chris Northey, IHEEM President at the Healthcare Estates Dinner and Awards

William J (Bill) Smith graduated in Mechanical Engineering from university and commenced employment in the automobile industry (Vauxhall).

From there he moved to an engineering construction organisation and later to an Engineering post in one of the London Regions before being appointed Chief Engineer of what was to become North and West Regional Health Authority where he managed a team of 200.

Bill held that post for the next 30 years, retiring in 1991 after which he undertook some part time engineering consultancy work for a period of approximately 7 years.

In parallel with his engineering responsibilities in his place of work, Bill quickly became involved in Professional Engineering bodies becoming a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineering and a Fellow of the Institute of Hospital Engineering, later to become the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management. In 1970 he became Branch Chairman of the NW Branch of the Institute of Hospital Engineering and between 1992 and 1994 he served as President of our Institute.

Bill retains an active interest in all things engineering and in IHEEM in particular. In 1998 he became a founder member of the IHEEM Audit Committee and since then he has played a huge part in the work of that committee and in the development of the role of the committee.

In spite of his several suggestions over recent years that it is time for him to retire and spend more time on his various other interests, Bill remains a valued member of that small Audit Committee. It is the view of his friends and colleagues on the Audit Committee that we should honour Bill with the Lifetime Award and it is also our view that there is no one more deserving of such recognition.
